Canada Set to Launch First-Ever Moon Rover for Global Search for Ice
Canada is set to launch its first-ever moon rover, with the mission to help the global search for frozen ice on the moon.[0] The discovery of water ice on the moon would advance space exploration by allowing researchers and astronauts to stay for longer missions on the lunar surface. The rover, developed by Canadensys Aerospace Corp., is expected to have a significant impact on the cost of sending people to the moon due to the potential to harness the ice for fuel.
The rover must be able to handle extreme temperatures, radiation, and jagged surfaces while transmitting data, and is expected to launch in three years from NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida.[1] In November of 2022, Canadensys was chosen by the national space agency to develop the rover, and the principal investigator for the mission, Gordon Osinski, said there could be other countries launching their rovers before Canada.[1]
The mission’s scientific investigator, Chris Herd, a planetary geologist at the University of Alberta, said the discovery of ice could be a stepping stone to further explorations of the solar system, including missions staffed by humans. Herd said, “It’s everything I’ve been working towards for the last couple of decades.”[2]
